Family Foundation Provides $110,000 In College Scholarships

The Vecellio Family Foundation provided $110,000 in college scholarships to 11 graduating high school seniors in 2006. The scholarships are worth $10,000 each — $2,500 per year for four years, in care of the selected college or university.
The scholarship program is limited to selected West Virginia high schools, a West Virginia conservation program, and dependents of Vecellio Group employees. It is administered by an independent review board, not by the Vecellio Group or its subsidiaries.
In 2006, three employee dependent scholarships were awarded. They went to Danielle C. Bradley, daughter of Dianne Bradley, Vecellio Group Executive Assistant; Casey S. Pratt, daughter of Vecellio & Grogan Loader Operator Glenn Pratt; and Jason D. Richardson, son of Tim Holt, a Survey Party Chief employed by V&G.
Danielle Bradley also received a scholarship from the Florida Transportation Builders Association. She is attending Baylor University in Waco, TX, majoring in Sports Medicine.
Casey Pratt is attending Belmont University in Nashville, TN, while Jason Richardson is attending the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.
Eight additional scholarships were awarded through the Foundation’s West Virginia programs.
William J. Vincent of Cool Ridge, representing Shady Spring High School, was selected for a Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memorial Scholarship, named to honor V&G’s late co-founder.
Liberty High School graduate Bradley Milam of Fairdale also received a Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memorial Scholarship.
At Woodrow Wilson High School, three students, all from Beckley, received scholarships. Suzanne E. Hange received a Rick Vecellio Memorial Scholarship, named to honor the late brother of Leo Vecellio, Jr.; Joseph D. Lynch earned a Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memorial Scholarship; and James W. Tuggle received an Al Janutolo Memorial Scholarship, named for a long-time V&G employee.
A Leo A. Vecellio, Sr., Memorial Scholarship also was awarded to Amanda Jones of Slab Fork, a graduate of Independence High School.
In McDowell County, Anthony Haskins of Campbell was awarded a Dr. Dante Castrodale Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Leo A. Vecellio, Sr.’s brother-in-law, who served as a physician in the area for many years.
This year’s Rick Vecellio Memorial Conservation Scholarship/ Youth Conservation Award went to Mildred S. Biggs of Helvetia.
Established in 1973, the non-profit Foundation’s scholarship programs have awarded more than $2.1 million in financial assistance to more than 250 students, mostly from selected high schools in West Virginia, where Vecellio & Grogan was founded.
