Shucet Is Featured Speaker At Vecellio Lecture
(3rd Quarter 2003)
Virginia Tech recently presented its third annual Vecellio Distinguished Lecture, featuring Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner Philip Shucet as the 2003 speaker.
Coincidentally, Mr. Shucet is a native of Beckley, WV, where Vecellio & Grogan was founded in 1938, and an acquaintance of the Vecellio family. Small world!
The lecture series is part of the Vecellio Construction Engineering and Management Program at Virginia Tech, funded by an endowment from the Vecellio family. Several Vecellio family members have graduated from Virginia Tech, including the late Leo Vecellio Sr., (1938), Leo Vecellio, Jr., (1968) and most recently, Michael Vecellio (2001).

Smithsonian Salutes Transportation Industry
The Vecellio Group and a host of other businesses and organizations are sponsoring a new exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution honoring the transportation industry.
America on the Move opens in November at the National Museum of American History. It will occupy 25,000 sq. ft. and feature hundreds of items showcasing transportations impact on America since the late 1800s.
The development of all segments of the industry roads, highways, airports, railways and sea ports will be highlighted with large-scale historical items and multi-media presentations. The Interstate Highway system will make up a significant portion of the new exhibit.
Congressional support funded the initial design of the exhibit, which replaces a previous collection at the museum, but it took contributions from the private sector and industry associations to bring it all together.
The American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), of which the Vecellio Group is a member, contributed $1 million. The National Asphalt Pavement Association, representing Ranger Construction and other members, also donated $1 million. General Motors, State Farm, ExxonMobil and others contributed major donations, as well.
With an anticipated six million visitors per year, America on the Move is expected to be one of the Smithsonians most popular draws.
The men, women and companies in the U.S. transportation construction industry deserve an exhibit like this, noted ARTBA leadership in a recent issue of Transportation Builder. America on the Move memorializes their unique and extraordinary legacy.
